Week of January 4-8, 2010

Happy New Year!

Show & Tell:  Letter Oo

Sight Word:   is

Welcome back and Happy New Year to all of you!  I trust you had a wonderful, snowy vacation and are anxious to have the kids back in school!  We have lots of fun things stored up for January, including winter stories and activities, units on penguins and animals, learning how to tell time!, discussing the importance of Martin Luther King, Jr. and preparing for our Open House!

A reminder to send in boots, snow pants, mittens and hats daily (and don’t forget to pack the shoes!) as we honestly try to play outside if the weather permits.

Here’s what’s happening in Kindergarten this week:

Language Arts:  Story of the week:  The Mitten, by Jan Brett; we will sequence the animals, dramatize the story, design and describe our own mittens, sing songs about mittens, and more!  We will also learn about vowels, list describing words, play with the letter O, and review the alphabet and sight words learned from the beginning of the year!

Math: Times of the day; days of the week; months of the year; longer/shorter time; and ordering events.

Religion:  Creation

Science:  How things move: experiment through pushing and pulling; varying surfaces and movement

Gerbil Sitting:  Thank you Zachary for watching our gerbils over vacation!  Hope they behaved for you!

I will be looking for more sitters over February and April vacations if you missed out this time!  J

Show & Tell:  You will notice on the homework chart, that our show & tell for the week of January 18th is a toy animal.  It can be plastic, stuffed or anything they can find.  They must be prepared to describe its habitat.  Ask:  if real, would it live on a farm, at a zoo, in a home as a pet or out in the wild?

Show & tell for the last week in January (January 25th) is Letter Hh.  I forgot to include it on the homework charts!  Sorry!!

Gingerbread Journals:  will be circulating throughout your homes in the next week or so.  Please try to read through it with your child on the day it arrives home if possible, and return the next day so the next student on the list can have a turn.  Should that night not be convenient, just tell us and we’ll give you another turn after we’ve rotated through the list.  J
