Nationwide the past 5 years have brought us 171 NEW Catholic schools. Here in New Hampshire we have 28 schools with 6,950 enrolled. What are these students experiencing that other may not?

Include Catholic tradition and academic excellence in a community grounded in faith, balanced curriculum that includes art, music, language, and fitness, strong preparation for further education, safe and disciplined environment, and individual attention in a caring community to just name a few. This is all according to the National Catholic Educational Association.

Here at St. Benedict Academy we embody all of these. This year’s Catholic Schools Week will showcase a few. Our outreach project is to benefit the Manchester Animal Shelter. As we strive to protect all of God’s creatures. Barnes & Noble book fair is a yearly event to help raise funds for our school. We encourage all who attend to help by simply making their normal purchases and using a voucher when cashing out. All sales via internet even your cousin in California will count towards our event as long as the Book Fair number is used-can be found on the voucher. Even that cup of coffee in the café!

See our parent page for downloads of vouchers (under ‘Fundraising’) and click Catholic Schools Week above for a complete list of events.

Saint Benedict Academy’s 3rd /4th grade basketball team wins FOURTH straight game…The third and fourth grade basketball team has won their 4th game in as many outings. They have gotten progressively better each game as they face stiffer competition with a thriller coming up on January 21st against St Catherine’s Parish Team at 9:00 AM. Liam, Caleb, Tom, Patrick, David, Paul, Ridge, all fourth graders and in their 4th year of basketball have been joined by 3rd graders Mia, Hannah, Tom, Aluel, Meghan and Theresa. Coaches Peter, David ,and Dan have noted how hard they work at weekly practice to improve their skills as they prepare for each game and how they arrive focused and ready to play on game day.

Enthusiastic fans have been very supportive over the season with parents, teachers Mrs. Hauck, Mrs Johnston, and Principal Sister Betty at many games. Over the holidays many siblings including some alumni basketball scholar siblings of Caleb, Patrick, Paul, and Tom have made it to the game, just a little jealous that they were not on the floor playing!

It has been an exciting season and is only half way through. “Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose” Go crusaders!

At Saint Benedict Academy the fourth grade class started a walking project. Our goal is to walk the length of the whole state. We walk every day, and in every class, without ever leaving our school. Right now we are walking through a farm town in northern New Hampshire. We went on Google earth and looked up Pittsburg, NH. That is where we are right now. Pittsburg looks like a small town. Most of the houses are right off the main road. Pittsburg has lots of wildlife and plants ; some of my classmates think they may want to live there. Pittsburg is big in size but small in population. this has been so exciting to use our pedometers to track how many miles we walk. This has been the best part of my year here at SBA!

In an effort to get to know our great state of New Hampshire, Mrs. Hauck’s fourth grade students will be walking the equivalent of the distance from the Canadian border to our border with Massachusetts. A generous SBA family donated the pedometers to the fourth grade so each student wears one during the school day. As the students progress in their walking mileage, they use their laptops to “Google Earth” where they would be along the journey.

Students began their “walk” in Chartierville, Canada just north of the border. As they walked south they watched Google Earth for signs of the border station.

“The students were so excited when we had actually crossed the border into the United States and they could go in on Google Earth and see the actual Border Station with the United States flag waving. They all cheered!” said Mrs. Hauck.

Students look at the towns, landscape, and local attractions all along the way through several websites, and they hope to arrive in in Nashua by spring. While it is a fun way to combine technology with learning, students also get the experience of increased exercise and lots of fun!!
