February 2010

Dear Parents and Fourth Graders:

Welcome to another quick month!  We have much going on this month!

In Math we continue with division and multiplication of larger numbers.  I cannot stress enough the importance of your fourth grader knowing their multiplication tables completely.  Those students most frustrated by math at this point are those slowed down by not knowing their facts.  Please continue to work on these at home.

In Reading we will be back in our Treasures series.  Remember that the Burrito Book Report is due on February 19th.  Students have an example at school of what needs to be done, and they have already created the burrito book.

The fourth graders did a wonderful job preparing for our Catholic Schools Week Prayer Service.  Hopefully you can join us Tuesday, Feb. 2nd after Mass to see the Prayer Service.

In Social Studies we are visiting the State House on the 10th.  Thank you to Mr. Bryer, Mrs. Sylvia and Mrs. Chandonnet for agreeing to be our helpers on the trip.  We will leave SBA at 9:30.  Please send a snack with your student for the bus ride and remember that we will return to the school for our regular Wednesday lunch (around 12:30).  Electronic devices are not allowed on this trip- it is only a 20-30 minute drive.  The students may bring a camera, but spending money is not necessary because we will not be visiting the gift shop.  The remainder of the month we will continue talking about Colonial New Hampshire.

In conjunction with the Social Studies curriculum, we are planning to take our early summer field trip to Plymouth Plantation in Massachusetts.  We do not have a confirmed date- but it will likely be the first two weeks in June.  We plan to hold two bake sales to raise money for the bus ride to help defray costs.  It is a two-hour bus ride but a really fantastic field trip so we're all looking forward to that.  At this time we want to schedule a bake sale for February 11th and 12th (Thursday and Friday).  If you would like to sign up to donate baked goods or to volunteer to help run the bake sale, please indicate that on the information sheet that will be going home in the Feb. 3rd White Envelope.  We hope to do another St. Patrick's Day bake sale in March.  Of course, raffle prizes are also a great hit with students, so if you have something to raffle off- please send it in too!  More details coming soon.

In Science we will be finishing up Matter.  Students did a great job with their presentations in January and learned a great deal about what it takes to teach the class about something.  We'll move on to Animals- characteristics, similarities, differences, adaptations and habitats and continue that through March.

We will hold a Valentine's Day celebration on Friday, Feb. 12th.  We will be decorating a Valentine's Day bags at school.  Please send in Valentines to distribute on the 12th.  Treats are also gladly accepted.  We will be watching a Bill Nye Science Guy Video (a real treat for the kids) during the celebration.

The end of the month is Winter Vacation break.  I wish all of you a safe, enjoyable, rejuvenating break from which we all come back refreshed and ready to dive back into school.
