GRADE 6 MAY NEWSLETTER                                                                          OMNIA PRO DEO

Dear Parents,

It’s 11:00 AM, Thursday morning of vacation week and as I write this I’m looking out my den doors onto the backyard and see life moving all around me.  It’s a beautiful sunny day and the thermometer says it’s already 72 degrees.  The birds and squirrels are out frolicking with their friends and my neighbors are taking their morning walks.  Consequently, this will be a short newsletter!

As you may recall, we had testing during the month of April.  This took a whole week out of our schedule but we‘re still plodding along.

In Religion, we are in chapter 11 and studying the kings who ruled over Israel.  In particular, we are studying King David.  You may remember the story of David and Goliath.  The young shepherd who slew the giant is the very same David who became Kind David and father of King Solomon.

In the coming weeks in math we will be learning how to divide by fractions, divide fractions and whole numbers and divide mixed numbers.

In Science we are studying heredity; what traits are inherited and what traits are learned.  We will also be learning about the laws of heredity and the famous monk who discovered them, Gregor Mendel.

There’s not much news to report in spelling.  We continue to move ahead, doing one chapter per week.  I don’t expect to finish the book as we don’t do spelling when we have a week that is three days or less.  I think we have missed two chapters so far, one during the week of Thanksgiving.

In reading we are reading a series of fanciful stories about animals that take on life-like qualities and solve problems by using their resourcefulness and imagination.  Our current story is about a cat and golden egg.

Our current writing unit is on letters and your students will be writing several different kinds of letters; friendly, thank you, and business letters.

In grammar we are in unit 11.  This is the study of adverbs.  This is a short unit and we should be having our unit test in the coming two weeks.

As you know, this is the first year that we have had a vocabulary book.  We are nearing the end or the book and your students have done very well.  With each chapter, our work gets increasingly harder as we have more words to remember.  Your students should have quite a pile of flashcards by now!

From the desk of Mrs. Talbot: We begin the month with the "Empires and Cultures of Ancient Africa". "How Revolutions changed the World" will be the topic at the end of the month..  This will lead us into the Industrial Revolution in preparation for our field trip to the mills at Lowell National Historical Park.

As I said, this letter would be short.  Please keep me and our class in your prayers as we head into the final weeks of school.

In Christ,

Cindy Bannon
