OCTOBER

Fall is here! The cold weather is coming too soon! But the students are keeping the room warm with all their hard work!

As you know—I have been sending out weekly reports that I think are useful and helpful! The students in the fifth grade and I want to thank you for being such patient, supportive parents!

We have settled into the new schedule and routine very well. However, I am noticing homework is not being put in the assignment books all the time. I am hoping to work with the children into making this more of a habit. I have encouraged some students to come and see me before the end of the day so I can check it over and make sure they have everything. The bus kids tend to “rush” at the end and that is where and when most of the “forgetfulness” is happening. I hope we can work together to “fix” this issue.

Book reports were so GOOD! I am very proud of everyone. For the month of October, I have assigned a Biography. I want the children to write a newspaper article on this person. I will be sending more information home soon. The book choice is due this week (before the 9th) and the report is due November 2nd!

We are struggling a bit in Math with equations. I think it’s the wording that is confusing some of the children. Once we get a little bit more practice with this we will be solving the equations. A little pre-algebra in October.J

Spelling is going well. I am going to start giving some children some more challenging words. I will try my best to keep the rule that is being focused on the same. I am seeing a pattern of 100’s during the test. However, the sentences that I assign each week have been something we, as a class need to work on. Ask your child about what their expectations are of these sentences…I would like to see what they say.J

In religion we are talking about the Beatitudes. We are really focusing on how we “share” our “gifts” with one another. I think this is great to discuss especially in the beginning of a school year.

In reading, we are beginning unit 2 of the Treasures series. The children are doing well. I am noticing on their weekly assessments that comprehension and summarizing seems to be a struggle with some of us. We will be working on these two components as well. I am planning on beginning a literature circle in November.
