  • Health Tips

For information on how to protect you and your family from diseases borne by ticks (Lyme disease) and mosquitoes ( West Nile Virus and Eastern equine Encephalitis) go to the NH Department of Health and Human Services website at www.dhhs.nh.gov or to the Center for Disease Control website at www.cdc.gov. There are Fact sheets available for each of the 3 diseases mentioned and tips on how you can prevent it from occurring in you or your loved ones.

Summer is just around the corner and children will be out in droves riding bikes, skating, on skooters etc as well as swimming. Make sure your child has the proper protective equipment to participate in these activities. Many injuries can be prevented by the use of helmets, wrist and knee guards etc. NEVER let your child swim alone or without adult supervision even in shallow water. We don’t want any of our kids hurt this summer. Also, keep an eye out for them running into the street.

    5-2-1-0

The state is promoting the 5-2-1-0 health guidelines for children.

5 Kids should eat 5 fruits and vegetables per day. Limit 100% fruit juice. Eating fruits and vegetables promotes good nutrition and a healthy weight.

  • Did you know…

That it takes at least 10 times for a food to be introduced before a child will like it. So don’t give up too soon!
That obesity is on the rise in our children and it is causing never seen before occurrences of Type II diabetes in children.
That 1/3 of all children born in 2000 will become diabetic in their lifetime if current eating habits are not improved.

Your child should have LESS than 2 hours of total screen time per day. That includes TV, computer, video games etc. Screen time decreases a child’s activity level and stimulates their desire to eat, especially junk foods.

Each child should get at least 1 hour of physical activity per day. This can be broken up into smaller segments of time but should total at least one hour. Physical activity can help increase a student’s ability to concentrate and reduce disruptive behavior. “Physical movement plays an important role in the creation of nerve cell networks which are actually the essence of learning” (Neurophysiologist Carla Hannaford from her book Smart Moves: Why learning is not all in your head.)

Children and adults should have zero soft drinks.

Did you know that….

Soft drinks have no nutritional value, what we call empty calories.

Drinking one can of soda per day can add 10-20 pounds a year

Diet drinks are no better because they fool the body into thinking a lot of sugar has entered the bloodstream which triggers a large release of insulin which in turn increases hunger. For every can of diet soda consumed, the risk of becoming overweight increases by 61%

Energy drinks can lead to increased dental erosions and may cause adrenal gland problems.

I hope these tips will inspire you to take a step towards ensuring a healthy lifestyle for your children and yourselves.
Have a great summer!
