Third grade students in Mrs. Kathy Johnston’s class were excited to welcome their pen-pals from Birch Hill Terrace to campus on Wednesday. The students have been exchanging letters with the Birch Hill residents since the beginning of the school year and had the opportunity to visit Birch Hill at Christmas for a special party. Today, it was the students’ turn to welcome the pen-pals.
The pen-pals arrived to cheering students who were thrilled to see the Birch Hill Terrace bus pull up on Ferry Street. The residents were escorted to the cafeteria where parents and family members set up a wonderful buffet of sweets, treats, and coffee. After a welcome and prayer, students sang several songs for the residents and performed three “Readers’ Theatre” skits. The students have been working in teams over the past few weeks to select their skit, create costumes and scenery, and stage the performances. The smiling faces in the audience indicated that the students’ work paid off! After a time to visit with their pen-pal, the third graders were excited to lead them on a tour of campus and show them their classroom. Along the way, many of the pen-pals were thrilled to see their former pen-pals who are now students in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades.
