Principal Receives Prestigious Fellowship

Principal Mr. Michael McLaughlin was awarded a Fellowship to study the Holocaust at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC for a week this July. The Eileen Ludwig Greenland National Bearing Witness Summer Institute is a partnership between the Anti-Defamation League, the National Catholic Educational Association, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, and the USHMM.

The fellowship program will bring together 40 Catholic School educators from around the country to engage in five-days of intensive study designed to give them the skills and resources necessary to bring the lessons of anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, and modern-day prejudice to their students and school communities. Mr. McLaughlin and other participants will explore the history of anti-Semitism and issues of prejudice in contemporary society.

The program takes place at various sites around the Washington, D.C. area including the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Embassy of Israel, Georgetown University, and a local synagogue. Sessions are led by specialists in the fields of Jewish studies, Holocaust studies, and Catholic-Jewish relations.

While a high school history teacher in Biloxi, Mississippi, Mr. McLaughlin taught Modern European History and developed a Humanities Elective on the Holocaust. After visiting Dachau concentration camp outside Munich, he was determined that his students should experience the history first-hand. He organized and led a trip for students and parents to visit Holocaust sites throughout Eastern Europe, including Auschwitz, in 2013.

Mr. McLaughlin is looking forward to his fellowship this summer as an opportunity to share the educational resources he developed and to learn practical strategies for teaching middle school students about the Holocaust and anti-Semitism.
