“Intro to LEGO Robotics Program” is a new program offered for all 5th and 6th grade students at St. Benedict Academy. The goal of this program is to help educate our students on the benefits using of LEGO Mindstorms robotics to teach problem solving, programming, mechanical design, teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship.
The NH LEGO League will be providing a 30 week class for 5th and 6th graders starting in October. Students will learn how robotic components can be used to solve problems. The class will teach functions related to motor controls, ultrasonic sensors, color sensors, touch sensors and more. Students will work in teams of four to develop strategies for solving several LEGO Technic challenges using key programming and engineering techniques.
In addition to learning sound engineering and programming practices, students will work on developing and improving key social skills. Teamwork is a critical part of working on a LEGO robotics team, students will be able to develop better listening, communicating and conflict resolution skills.
Finally, a research project will be included in the process, based on the idea of how we deal with trash and the impact of waste. Students will innovate a product or develop an idea to solve a waste related problem. This project process will help them with academic research skills, public speaking skills and allow them to showcase creative thinking skills.
